Strong Manchester Women Podcast launches this summer!

We’re chuffed to bits to tell you about our latest podcast – ‘Strong Manchester Women.

The brand-new podcast tells the stories of fourteen women from across Manchester, who are making a positive difference and lasting impact in our communities. Scroll down to listen to the trailer.

Supported by Manchester City Council and The Pankhurst Trust, each episode is an inspiring conversation with the changemakers, activists and trailblazers who make Manchester and beyond a better place to live, work and play; including champion boxer Stacey Copeland, 90 year old Pride of Manchester winning Gardener Dena Murphy (left), the Deputy Leader of Bury Council Lynne Ridsdale, Manchester International Festival performing poet Nasima Begum and Trans Creative Artistic Director Kate O’Donnell.

One of the women profiled is Sarah Judge, a Councillor for Manchester City Council and Lead Member for Women. She says that the campaign and podcast are important to help celebrate everyday women,

“The women profiled in the campaign and podcast are normal women like you and me, women you may not have heard of before. With women’s rights and issues by no means solved, I hope the Strong Manchester Women campaign can inspire more women to rise up and make a difference, no matter who they are, or where they come from.”

The first episode of the Strong Manchester Women Podcast, which has been funded by the Centenary Cities Legacy Fund, is released on Wednesday 24th July and features Denise Yuen Megson, a Nurse Lecturer at the University of Salford, volunteer for the Wai Yin Society and radio presenter on All FM.

How To Listen To Podcasts

“I don’t even know how to listen to a podcast!” Oh my, if we had a quid for every time we hear that – we’d certainly be typing this from a tropical beach, whilst sipping pina coladas.

This is the number 1 reason people don’t listen to podcasts – they don’t know how!

So, here’s a dead simple guide – no jargon, just simple instructions for busy humans.

First things first…what is a podcast

A ‘Podcast’ is a nugget of audio, that anyone can make, that anyone can listen to, anytime that they want – over the internet.

These nuggets of audio live on the internet and can be heard using ‘Podcast Players’ (also known as ‘podcast catchers’, ‘podcast apps’…) and sometimes they also live on the websites of the people who have made that podcast.

There’s lots of different Podcast Players, but for the purposes of keeping it totally simple and straightforward, we’re going to focus on the big boys. It’s then up to you if you fancy exploring more.

Most podcasts will be on all Podcast Players, so don’t feel like you’re missing out by choosing one over another!

Importantly, all of these COST NOTHING – PODCASTS ARE FREE TO LISTEN TO – REPEAT ALL OF THESE ARE FREE

Whilst there’s starting to be more ‘paid for’ content in podcast land, for the most part, podcasts cost nothing to listen to.

First, choose what you’ll be listening on

iPhone, iPad, mac

Search your device’s app for an app called ‘Podcasts’ – many IOS devices already have this built-in. If not, head to the apple store and download it (for free!)

Android phone / tablet
If your device is a Google Pixel, Samsung, HTC, Moto, Huawei, Sony, odds are your operating system is Android. This means you’ll need to download the ‘Google Podcasts’ app from the Play Store (for free!)

Alexa
There’s a great article here on how to listen to podcasts on your Amazon Smart Speaker. It’s dead, dead easy.

Google Home
It’s as easy as asking it to play a podcast. Detailed instruction here.Again, super simple.

Smart TV
The best app we’ve found to listen to podcasts on a smart TV is TuneIn.

PC Desktop / Laptop
Head to a Podcast Players that have websites that you can play podcasts on like Stitcher or TuneIn

You can listen via the podcast’s website if they have that option too – like we do for our Strong Manchester Women Podcast.

Mac Desktop / Laptop
Listen via itunes

Spotify
Ok, so not strictly a device, but if you have Spotify on any of the above, you can listen to podcasts on there too

Now you have a Podcast Player lined up, you now have the means to listen to podcasts

HOW EXCITING! You have at your fingertips a WEALTH of amazingness. Literally, thousands of podcasts.

To discover podcasts, take advantage of the search function that the Podcast Players have, most also have suggested podcasts and lists of categories too for you to target your exploration.

Podcast workshop Manchester announced!

We’re dead happy to bring a MIC Podcast workshop to Manchester city centre.

We understand what it’s like, you have an idea for podcast but you have no idea where to start, or you know it could be great for your organisation, but don’t think you have anything to say!

Well, this workshop is designed for you!

This ‘Introduction to Podcasting’ session is no-nonsense, simple to understand, jargon busting two and a half hours covering the basic tools and knowledge to get you podcast ready.

What sort of podcasts exist (including examples from VCSE organisations)
How do people listen to them?
Tools to help you generate podcast ideas for you or your organisation
Equipment 101, what exactly do you need to get started
How to get it out there

Following on from the success of the podcast club at Media City, MIC is dead chuffed to announce the launch of MIC’s Podcast Edit Club in Manchester City Centre!

What’s it all about then?

MPEC (catchy, no?) is a space for you to get on with the serious business of editing, recording or planning your podcast, whilst having the opportunity to interact with actual humans (if you need to) and have a drink (on us!)

Let’s be honest podcasting can be quite a lonely game. MPEC is a unique, supportive environment for pro audio producers and DIY podcasters to connect, troubleshoot tech problems together, get a fresh pair of ears on their latest edits or kick-start new connections and collaborations.

The idea is help everyone, whether pro or bedroom podcaster make awesome audio.

Extra support to help you on the night

PLUS, at the venue, right on Manchester’s Market Street, is a professional studio that you can record an interview or some bits for your podcast. Slots will be first come, first served and half hour in length.

They’ll also be pro audio producers knocking around to give you some real first class advice if you’re stuck, have a question or need an ear.

MIC’s Podcast Edit Club returns to Media City!

Following on from it’s successful first event earlier this year, MIC’s Podcast Edit Club returns to Media City in Salford in May to bring together the region’s growing podcasting community.

The event is already making an impact and has helped people start their own podcasts, such as Rachel Goulding the Director of the live music website Show Stream. Rachel credits the meetup as being invaluable in the start-up of her new podcast, she adds,

“I can highly recommend MIC’s Podcast Edit Club for learning, sharing knowledge, ideas and my favourite thing, creating community around what we do.”

MIC’s Edit Club provides a space for podcast producers to edit their latest episode, record interviews, plan their podcast or simply meet other local, podcasters. The free event, held at The Landing in the heart of Media City, will also have professional audio producers on hand to offer real, first-class advice.

Get experimental with your ears – Listen to new…

If you think podcasts are just true-crime, BBC radio re-runs, dad porno, or ‘not for you’, then think again!

There’s over half a million podcasts out there, from documentary style and interviews to panel discussions and one man shows. I want to show you in this article, that there’s something out there to suit every need, want, hobby and erm, fetish.

So, I want to challenge you to listen to 1 episode of 1 podcast that haven’t heard before. Embrace the bizarre, dip outside of your comfort zone, go beyond your norm. You don’t have to like what you find, just give it a try!

Birds!

For example, a few months ago I discovered The Casual Birder Podcast through the Brit Pod Scene network of British-made podcasts (that you can search to discover new stuff too!). I like birds, don’t get me wrong, but I’ve never taken a great deal of interest of what’s flying above my head. To be really honest with you, the closest I’ve got to bird-watching, is scooping up the presents that my cat leaves me.

I listened to the first episode of Casual Birder and was I hooked. It’s dead easy to listen to, it’s really interesting, well-produced and Suzie the presenter, is a delight. I enjoyed it so much, that it’s now part of me and the cat’s morning routine. We listen whilst we’re brushing our teeth and having our coffee. Also, weirdly he’s not brought another bird kill back since (touch wood).

How to get exploring

So, whether you’ve not delved into the world of podcasts yet or you only have a few core ones that you listen to regularly, let me inspire your ears today – and who knows, you might find your new favourite! Thank me later guys.

As a starter and to help you get to grips with the wide range of podcasts available to you, right at your fingertips, here’s a list of the current podcast categories on iTunes. Other podcast platforms such as Google Podcasts, Player.fm or Stitcher will have the same or similar. You can search directly in any of these podcast platforms to find your niche.
