Community Reporters aged 55 and over get skills, knowledge and confidence to launch their own podcast

“In three hours, our group of community reporters moved from zero podcast knowledge, to feeling confident to find and listen to podcasts and even wanting to produce their own! A feat we wasn't expecting! We knew MIC Media could unlock this world of audio for our reporters, which otherwise would have remained closed to them"

About

Yellow Jigsaw are community media experts. They address the lack of representation in mainstream media. Their project, Talking About My Generation, is a campaign with a group of over 55’s community reporters, to challenge stereotypes about growing older. It was originally funded by Ambition for Ageing.

Mission

To provide the 16 community reporters with the skills, resources and platform to report on the world around them, from photography, and social media, to video production and podcasting.

Goals

  • To gauge if there was an interest in podcasting
  • Provide information about how to listen and make podcasts

Challenges

  • No skills in-house to provide podcast training
  • Community reporters had zero knowledge of podcasts
  • Required fun, friendly and accessible training for over 55’s
  • To introduce the group to industry professionals
  • Some participants not engaging with the project at that stage

Solutions

  • 3 podcasting training sessions delivered by MIC, in-person – fully tailored via consultation with client to meet needs, beneficiary abilities and funding obligations
  • 16 community reporters trained
  • 1 podcast launched
  • 17 podcast episodes (and counting!)
“I had no podcasting inclinations until I went to MIC media’s podcasting workshop. I’d never even listened to one! But then I started listening to some podcasts they played at the workshop. The one I really got into was the girl that was secretly recording her boyfriend. I find that hilarious!

From being involved in this podcast I’m now teaching some student interns about how to edit our podcast! For example, someone swore in an interview and I’m going to show them how to remove it. It started with one intern at first and now it’s four! I never thought I’d be attempting to do something like this! I’m a bit nervous, because I’m still learning myself, but I do like a challenge!”
