How to use your archive in your podcast with…
The Log Books podcast is an award-winning podcast from the LGBTQ+ helpline Switchboard. Discover how they used their archive of log books from the helpline to create awareness of their important service at the next Grab The MIC: Live on Tuesday 15th November.
The Switchboard charity is a helpline for anyone who wants to talk about gender identity and sexuality. Their podcast The Log Books podcast gives you a glimpse into LGBTQ+ life across 3 decades. Each episode of the podcast centres around their log book entries made by volunteers who staffed the phone lines from the charity’s first day in 1974.
They created the podcast by delving into the content they already had, in abundance and at their fingertips. At the same time, creating awareness of both LGBTQ+ issues and their important service, which is still active and doing brilliant things to this day.
The Log Books podcast, supported by the Heritage Lottery fund, has received well-deserved kudos from the likes of Miranda Sawyer at The Guardian, Metro, Stylist, Esquire and the Evening Standard. Not to mention a plethora of awards including The British Podcast Awards and the Audio Production Awards.
The podcast, which ran for three series, uncovers stories ranging from police entrapping gay men meeting for sex in toilets, women losing custody of their children for being lesbians and people getting kicked out of pubs for wearing pro-gay badges. They all create a unique insight into British LGBTQ+ life in the 70s, 80s, 90s and early 00’s.
So why did Switchboard choose this approach, how did they make it work and what impact has the The Log Books podcast had?
