A New Website? It’s Coming…

We’ll be honest, our current website’s creaking a bit, isn’t it?

That’s because behind the scenes, we’ve been busy making something new. A fresh, shiny, much-improved MIC media website is on its way.

It’s been a long time coming, but these things take time when you want to get them just right. The new MIC site will better reflect who we are, what we do, and the brilliant social impact businesses and organisations we get to work with.

It’ll be easier to navigate, clearer to understand, and packed with ways to explore our podcast production and training offers and how we help people use podcasting for good.

In the meantime, if you spot anything that doesn’t look quite right around here, just know it’s all being sorted very soon.

Podcaster community MIC’s Podcast Club celebrates six years!

Podcaster community MIC’s Podcast Club celebrates six years of supporting indie podcasters from across the world.

Six years ago on the 29th November 2018, a small group of 20 podcasters gathered in a Manchester pub. We originally called ourselves MIC, a name I loved so much I later adopted for my business!

We had special guests, broadcasters and podcast extrodinaries Sam Walker (BBC, What Goes on Media) and Emma Goswell (BBC, Gaydio, Coming Out Stories, Effin Hormones) to chat all things podcasting.

I had no idea that this small event would be the start of something proper brilliant.

A global podcaster community of almost 2,000 indie creators, from Salford to Sweden.

Why

I started MIC’s Podcast Club because there was a glaring gap in the podcasting community. While online advice was abundant, it was often overwhelming, contradictory, and even unkind. I wanted to create a safe and supportive space where podcasters could learn from each other and grow their shows.

Most importantly, learn from the experts, the folks creating podcasts week after week.

But who are the experts? The indie podcasters themselves of course!

What started as a series of in-person events quickly evolved into a thriving online community. The pandemic forced us to pivot to virtual meetups, which grew our reach far beyond Manchester!

Our Unique Approach

Our monthly online meetups are an open Q&A session where podcasters can ask questions about anything from podcasting basics to advanced techniques, or the latest industry news or trends. Our community members pool their knowledge to provide practical advice and support.

We’ve witnessed firsthand the power of community. MIC’s Podcast Club has blossomed friendships, collaborations, and even career opportunities. We’ve seen members secure sponsorships, land paid gigs, and grow their listener base.

What we’re super proud of is the safe, respectful and supportive space we’ve created for podcaster peer to peer support.

Celebrating Our Community

We’ve hosted over 70 events, with some featuring podcast legends like Olly Mann, podcast experts like Arielle Nissenblatt, industry leaders like BBC Sounds, the groundbreaking Brown Girls Do It Too podcast, top production agencies like Chalk & Blade, ace awards like the British Podcast Awards and the Independent Podcast Awards and kick-ass hosts like Captivate. We also offer a platform for our community to share their skills, like Ian Sanders from Cold War Conversations podcast or Steph Fuccio from Coffeelike Media.

November 21st marks Social Enterprise Day, and it’s the perfect opportunity to tell you why we’re super proud to be a part of the social enterprise economy.

Social enterprises are a vital part of the UK economy, contributing billions of pounds annually. They create jobs, tackle social and environmental issues, and strengthen communities.

As you can see with MIC media, a podcast production and training company, there’s loads of different types of businesses that are social enterprises from pubs to banks to leisure centres.

Best Podcast Winners – twice!

MIC media and GM Moving win ‘Best Podcast’ for ‘Right to The Streets’ at the MPA Inspiration Awards, a celebration of the very best creative, media and digital talent in Manchester.

The safety and empowerment of women and girls in public spaces is a pressing issue. To address this challenge, MIC media and GM Moving, Manchester’s movement for movement, collaborated to create ‘Right to the Streets’, a groundbreaking podcast that explores the experiences and challenges faced by women and girls.

The series has now won ‘Best Podcast’ at the MPA Inspiration Awards. We’re also thrilled to bits that this is the second year running that MIC has scooped the Best Podcast accolade at the annual celebration of inspiring talent, innovation, and creativity.

Right To The Streets

This ambitious 2-series ‘Right To The Streets’ podcast explores the issue of women and girls feeling safe on our streets, parks and public spaces.

Right to the Streets (RTTS) is an initiative led by GM Moving working alongside a wide range of local partners, including Trafford Council, with investment via the Home Office’s Safer Streets Fund.

Piloted in North Trafford, the trailblazing RTTS movement tests a whole system, place-based solution to tackle women’s safety. It recognises the importance of public spaces for health and well-being and how women’s experiences and fear of harassment restricts their freedom.

GM Moving commissioned MIC media to produce 17 episodes across two series.

The ‘Right to the Streets’ podcast series, features over 125 different, local voices, including policy makers, strategic leaders and community member. They all help to capture the vision and passion of the initiative and importantly grow the learning and this important movement.

The podcast shares stories and best practices to address the root causes of violence against women and girls. By inspiring individuals, communities, and policymakers, Right to the Streets seeks to create a culture where women and girls feel safe, belong and are invited to be active. Shifting the dial from fear to freedom.

The Awards

The MPA Inspiration Awards, hosted by broadcaster, Mark Radcliffe celebrates and spotlights the best creative, digital, and media from across Greater Manchester.

First staged in 2013, the awards inspire future innovation and creativity and cover a variety of sectors and consist of people-focused awards and specialist categories including The Martyn Hett Inspiring Manchester award and Freelance Hero.

The awards are delivered by the Manchester Publicity Association (MPA), a membership organisation that supports, develops and nurtures Manchester’s creative, digital and media industry.

This recognition is a testament to the hard work, vision, dedication, and creativity of GM Moving and the MIC team, as well as the powerful impact of this important project.

The MPA Award judges chaired by Sam Walker, Marketing and Creative Director from N Brown Group PLC, and including the leaders from BBC, Factory International, McCann Manchester, Manchester Metropolitan University, Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce said of Right To The Streets,

Introducing the AHRC Creative Communities Podcast

MIC media partners with Northumbria University to launch the AHRC Creative Communities Podcast, exploring the power of cultural research and collaborative creativity.

Drum roll please…following a year-long collaboration, MIC media is super proud to announce the launch of the first series of the AHRC Creative Communities podcast, a groundbreaking series that explores the power of co-creation in community research.

Developed in partnership with the AHRC Creative Communities team, hosted by Northumbria University, the podcast features the stories of five Community Innovation Practitioners (CIPs) working across the UK.

AHRC Creative Communities is a major research programme funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) and hosted by Northumbria University, exploring how co-created culture can enhance belonging, address regional inequality, deliver devolution, and break down barriers to opportunity with communities in devolved settings across all 4 nations of the UK.

A year-long collaboration: Supporting CIPs to create a podcast series

Over the past year, MIC Media embarked on a collaborative journey with the five Community Innovation Practitioners (CIPs). Our goal was to equip them with the skills, knowledge, resources and confidence needed to produce their own podcast episodes as part of this brand-new series.

Through a comprehensive training programme, we provided the CIPs with hands-on experience in Podcast planning and development, Interviewing techniques, Audio editing and production and Storytelling and narrative structure.

Following the podcast training, the CIPs planned and recorded the elements that make up each of their podcast episodes.

The MIC team, including podcast producer Helen Brown and our Editor Jamie Green worked closely with the CIPs throughout the process, offering guidance, support, and feedback.

This collaborative approach, that continued into the post-production / editing phase, led by MIC, ensured that the final episodes authentically captured the voices and stories of the communities involved.

A journey of co-creation with communities

The Creative Communities podcast offers a unique glimpse into the diverse experiences and challenges faced by communities across the UK. Through engaging interviews and stories, the podcast showcases how creativity and collaboration can drive positive change.

Over six episodes, meet the Community Innovation Practitioners leading the way. Follow their journeys of cultural collaboration, co-creation, and innovation, showcasing real-life examples of how creativity empowers communities to build a stronger, more resilient UK.

New Community Innovation Practitioner Award 2025/2026

Following the successful first round of Community Innovation Practitioner projects the AHRC Creative Communities project has just opened the Community Innovation Practitioner (CIP) Awards for 2025/2026, doubling the number of opportunities for new CIPs. A call is open until 6th January 2025 for expressions of interest for up to 10 Community Innovation Practitioners with at least one award in each of the four nations.

Amplifying Young Activists’ Voices with Amnesty International UK

MIC media partners with the Amnesty International UK’s Youth Collective to equip young activists with the skills to launch their own podcast, amplifying their voices and advocating for human rights.

MIC recently had the absolute pleasure to work with Amnesty International’s UK Youth Collective to provide comprehensive podcast training for the group. The training equipped these brilliant young activists with the skills and knowledge needed to launch and maintain their own podcasts, amplify their voices and drive positive change.

Empowering young activists through podcasting

Podcasting is a powerful tool for storytelling, advocacy, and community building. We know through our work that podcasting is a powerful tool to help people and organisations reach new and far-reaching audiences, share important messages, and inspire action. Recognising the potential of podcasting for social impact, MIC media is committed to supporting good eggs from everywhere to exploit the incredible power of podcasts.

Training Highlights

The training sessions delivered by MIC provided The Collective with a solid foundation in podcasting, covering a range of essential topics including podcast fundamentals, pre-production and planning, recording, post-production and distribution and marketing.

Grace Farmer, Senior Community Organiser at Amnesty International UK Youth Collective, expressed her enthusiasm for the podcast training,

“MIC’s training is the perfect starting point for anyone who is keen to launch a podcast but doesn’t know where to begin. Amnesty International UK’s Youth Collective are now equipped with a structure to take them through the steps needed for launching their podcast. MIC’s training provided guidance on all things from equipment needed, to editing episodes and marketing – we highly recommended it!”

For the second year running, MIC media has been shortlisted for ‘Best Podcast’ at this year’s MPA Inspiration Awards 2024. The nomination, alongside GM Moving, is for our Right To The Street podcast.

GM Moving and MIC media are nominated for an MPA award in the Best Podcast category for the Right to the Streets edition of the GM Moving Podcast. It was released in two series in correlation with the Right to the Streets movement between May 2023 and February 2024.

Right to the Streets is a movement to make streets, parks, and public spaces safe, joyful, and welcoming places where everyone is invited to be active and move about freely.

The first Right to the Street series focused on starting the conversation around safer streets, and the second shared GM Moving’s learnings as the campaign grew across North Trafford.

GM Moving are up for another award too, the Martyn Hett Inspiring Manchester Award for the overall Right To The Streets movement. This award is named after Martyn, one of the 21 people who tragically lost their lives in the 2017 Manchester bombing. The Award recognises any activity that reflects our great city and its people and purpose – anything that reflects the city and its true spirit.

The MPA Inspiration Awards are judged by a panel of leaders from both industry bodies and national and regional businesses with the winners to be announced on Wednesday 16 October in Manchester.

MIC media founder Vic Elizabeth Turnbull joins the panel of judges for this year’s Independent Podcast Awards.

Here MIC media, supporting independent creators is woven into the very fabric of what we do. We empower social impact organisations and value-led businesses to find their voice through podcasting, and a large part of that involves guiding passionate individuals – the backbone of the industry!

We coach countless indie creators through the launch of their podcasts and nurture a thriving community of nearly 2,000 global podcasters with MIC’s Podcast Club.

This commitment to independent voices makes it incredibly exciting to announce that our founder Vic Elizabeth Turnbull has been invited to join the judging panel for this year’s Independent Podcast Awards!

Now in its second year, the Independent Podcast Awards shine a spotlight on the voices that truly define the spirit of podcasting. They celebrate the independent creators – the bedroom studios, the kitchen table editors, and the solo storytellers who pour their hearts and creativity into their shows, free from the constraints of corporate influence.

“These awards celebrate the very foundation of podcasting – the independent voices who saw the potential of this medium two decades ago and nurtured it into the vibrant industry it is today. It’s been a busy year of awards judging already for Vic, having been invited to participate alongside the judging panels of the British Podcast Awards, the International Women’s Podcast Awards, and the Manchester Publicity Association’s (MPA) Inspiration Awards. We’re so excited to hear more amazing podcasting talent through the IPA’s!

We’re bursting with excitement to announce that MIC media has been nominated for the Creative Business of the Year Award at the upcoming Pride of Tameside Business Awards!

This nomination is a huge honour for our entire team. We’re a passionate bunch who pour our hearts into crafting podcasts for amazing clients and upskilling thousands of people from across the country to create their own podcasts. To be recognised alongside other Tameside creative powerhouses is incredibly humbling.

The Pride of Tameside Business Awards celebrates the very best businesses in the Tameside borough. It’s a fantastic event that recognises innovation, entrepreneurial spirit, and the positive impact local businesses have on the community.
