The Brief
Yellow Jigsaw are community media specialists. Their Talking About My Generation project – an online news site and podcast series, set out to change the conversation around ageing across Greater Manchester.
They wanted to train over-50s community reporters to share their own stories, and those of others in their generation, through podcasting.
Enter MIC.
Our job was to help people who had never even listened to a podcast go from “what’s that?” to “I can make one” – and feel proud of what they’d created.

What We Delivered
We’ve delivered regular podcast training for the project since 2019 – supporting new waves of over-50s community reporters.
Our sessions cover:
- What makes a great podcast
- Planning and scripting ideas
- Hands-on recording and editing training
- Confidence-building for total beginners
- Ongoing support and guidance for new cohorts
We tailor every session to the group – making sure it’s welcoming, practical and genuinely empowering.
The result? Changing the Record, a podcast made by and for older people, showing the power, creativity and stories of their generation.
The Impact
This is podcasting as empowerment.
- One participant who had never listened to a podcast is now editing episodes – and sharing his skills with student interns.
- Others have gone from total beginners to confident audio storytellers, reporting from their communities with pride.
This work proves that podcasting doesn’t just build skills, it builds voice, confidence, and connection.
What They Said
“When we brought MIC in, most of our community reporters had never even listened to a podcast – let alone imagined they could make one.
MIC made something that felt alien, feel achievable. They totally put people at ease, tailored everything to our group, and brought out real confidence.
We’ve now got over-50s reporters podcasting, editing, and even passing those skills on. It’s been more successful than we ever expected.”
