Thinking about starting a podcast for your business?
Before you start Googling microphones, choosing music or trying to figure out if you need to film the whole thing too, there’s a much more important question to answer:
What do you actually want your podcast to do?
On Friday 25 September, we’re teaming up with Tameside Means Business, from Tameside Council, to run a free, in-person workshop in Stalybridge all about the strategic ways podcasting can support your business.
And importantly, this isn’t a technical “how to start a podcast” workshop.
We’re not going to spend two hours comparing microphones or trying to convince you that you MUST absolutely start a podcast.
Quite the opposite, actually.
Should Your Business Even Have A Podcast?
Podcasts can be brilliant for businesses. They can help you build trust, share your expertise, tell stories, strengthen relationships with your audience and create useful content that can keep working long after you’ve pressed publish.
But that doesn’t mean every business needs one.
At MIC media, one of the biggest things we’ve learned from producing more than 60 podcast projects is that the strongest podcasts tend to start with a clear purpose.
Not a microphone.
Before you think about episode titles, artwork or whether you need one of those fancy podcast studios with neon signs all over the walls, you need to know why you’re making the thing in the first place.
Who is it for? Why would they listen? What could a podcast help your business achieve? And is a podcast actually the best way to achieve it?
Those are the sorts of questions we’ll get stuck into during the workshop.

What We’ll Explore In The Workshop
This session is designed to help you think differently about where podcasting could fit into your business.
We’ll look at how businesses can use podcasts as a marketing and relationship-building tool, a way to demonstrate expertise and build credibility, a platform for sharing stories and ideas, and part of a wider content strategy.
We’ll also talk about why people actually listen to podcasts, what makes a business or branded podcast worth listening to and some of the common mistakes businesses make when they jump into podcasting without thinking things through first.
And we’ll look at what’s realistically involved in making one.
By the end of the session, you should have a much clearer idea of where podcasting fits into your business. And you might decide it doesn’t.
That’s a perfectly fine answer too.
Bring Your Podcast Questions
We’ll finish the workshop with a 20-minute live “Ask Me Anything” session.
So if you’ve got a podcast idea scribbled in your Notes app, you’ve already started one and you’re wondering what to do next, or you’ve got a question about equipment, formats, video, guests, marketing or pretty much anything else podcast-related, bring it along.
We’ll answer as many as we can and you’ll have the chance to get some tailored feedback on your own ideas.
Who Is The Workshop For?
The workshop is for businesses in Tameside who are curious about podcasting and want to understand whether it’s worth their time and investment.
You might already have an idea. You might have experimented with podcasting before. Or you might simply keep hearing that your business should have a podcast and want someone to tell you whether that’s actually true.
You don’t need any podcasting experience and you don’t need to bring any equipment.
Just bring your ideas and your questions.
